How to make Dal Fry Easily - Simple Steps

Ingredients to make Simple and Easy Dal Fry:

1 cup toor dal

2 medium sized onions (chopped)

4 garlic cloves (chopped)

1 inch ginger (chopped)

3 green chillies (sliced in the middle)

1 big tomato (chopped)

½ tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp chili powder

1 tsp coriander powder or curry powder (use any one of these powders)

1 tsp garam masala

1 tsp mustard seeds

1 tsp cumin seeds

2 dry red chillies

2 tbsps vegetable oil

Salt to taste

Coriander leaves, to garnish

How to make Dal Fry Easily:


Wash toor dal 2-3 times and drain. Pressure cook the washed toor dal in a pressure cooker for 2-3 whistles. Switch it off and keep aside.

Heat oil in a non-stick pan and put mustard seeds. Once it begins to splutter, put the cumin seeds and dry red chillies. Now add the chopped onion and green chillies and saute for 5 minutes. Put chopped garlic and chopped ginger and saute till the onion becomes golden brown. Add the chopped tomatoes and saute the mixture well till the tomatoes are mashed up and blend with the mixture. Now add turmeric powder, chili powder and coriander powder/ curry powder (whichever you choose to put). Also add salt according to your taste. You can change the quantity of chili powder also according to your liking.

Once the spice powders blend with the mixture, add the cooked toor dal with the water in which it was cooked. Pour some more water until it is little more than your desired thickness. Close the pan with the lid and let the curry cook for 5 minutes. Open the lid and add garam masala. Also check if there is enough salt and add more salt if needed. Close the lid again and cook for 5 more minutes. Open the lid and check for the gravy’s consistency and thickness. Switch off the gas once you are satisfied with the thickness. Please note that toor dal curry becomes slightly thicker upon removing it from the heat and leaving untouched for sometime.


Serve the dal fry with roti’s or rice and enjoy it hot!
